Rejections, setbacks, and everlasting uncertainty: workshop on “failure” in academia

Failure is a significant part of academic life. There is likely no academic who has not experienced a rejection of an article manuscript, funding application, job, or who has not had to modify their research plan after learning that the original one was not going to work. In fact, failure is such a common experience for academics that we might ask: is it really a “failure” if it is an inherent part of being a researcher? In this workshop, we will embrace the endeavours that did not go according to plan, whether they are related to doing research, writing, careers, or collaboration. We will share experiences of difficult moments in our PhD projects (or after), as well as discuss how we coped with those situations. The goal of the workshop is to both normalise uncertainty and setbacks as well as to find ways to turn those setbacks into learning opportunities.

The workshop will be open for anyone who wants to share their experiences of doing research, whether they are an early-career researcher or a more established scholar. It is possible to take part either in person or online. For those attending in person, snacks and drinks will be served.

The facilitator of the workshop is Postdoctoral Researcher Melina Aarnikoivu. In her doctoral work, she studied doctoral education as social action. In her career, she has experienced several rejections, setbacks, and changed plans, and is gradually becoming used to them.
